The Golden State Warriors and their athletic forward have agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million deal, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The second year is a team option, giving the Warriors flexibility should trade talks heat up or if a bigger extension comes into play next summer.
Breaking: Ending a summer-long stalemate, Jonathan Kuminga has agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million contract to return to the Golden State Warriors, agent Aaron Turner told ESPN. The deal comes against the backdrop of reported friction between Kuminga and head coach Steve Kerr. League insiders have hinted that the 21-year-old would have preferred a move to the Sacramento Kings, a rising Western Conference squad that could give him more offensive freedom.
Last season, Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 47 games — steady numbers that highlight both his promise and inconsistency. In the postseason, he stepped into bigger minutes only when injuries forced Kerr’s hand. With Jimmy Butler sidelined briefly against Houston and Stephen Curry missing most of the Minnesota series, Kuminga showed flashes but never seemed fully trusted by the coaching staff.

Contract talks between the Warriors and Kuminga’s camp have been rocky. Golden State originally dangled a three-year, $75.2 million offer with a team option, which Kuminga declined. His agent countered with a three-year, $82 million proposal including a player option in Year 3, but the Warriors held firm. The compromise: a shorter deal with financial security now and flexibility later.
For fans, this agreement feels less like a long-term marriage and more like a holding pattern. The Warriors keep a valuable trade asset on the books, while Kuminga secures a payday and a chance to prove he deserves star-level money.
Don’t be surprised if this deal is just the prelude to a blockbuster move.
