The hype for Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford just keeps getting bigger, and even the commentary team is drawing headlines. With the September 13 “Fight of the Century” at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas set to stream globally on Netflix, fans will hear insights from an elite broadcast crew featuring Andre Ward, Max Kellerman, Jon Anik, and more.

But Ward’s spot on the panel sparked debate. Some critics questioned whether the retired, undefeated champion could stay impartial, given his close bond with Crawford. The boxing Hall of Famer, though, isn’t having any of it.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani, Ward dismissed the idea that he’d let personal ties cloud his judgment. He reminded fans that he’s already commentated on bouts involving Shakur Stevenson—someone he considers like family—without issue.

“I’ve called Shakur’s fights before, and that’s my little brother. I mentor him, I love him, but I still gave the fans professional commentary,” Ward explained. “People need to stop with the low-hanging fruit. I’ve been in this sport too long to let bias creep into my work. I don’t need to convince anyone of my integrity.”

Ward, of course, knows the fight game better than most. The former super middleweight and light heavyweight king retired at 32-0 with 16 knockouts, cementing himself as one of the greatest technicians of his era. A dream fight between him and Canelo never happened, but now, Ward’s job is to break down every punch, counter, and adjustment between Mexico’s superstar and America’s pound-for-pound maestro.

And while he promises professionalism, Ward hasn’t shied away from making a prediction. He’s backing his guy, Terence “Bud” Crawford.

“I’m going with Crawford,” Ward said. “Yes, it’s a big jump in weight and yes, Canelo is dangerous. But until someone shows me they can break Terence’s will, I’m not betting against him. It’s no disrespect to Canelo—it’s just that right now, I can’t pick against Crawford against anybody.”

That’s a bold stance, considering Canelo is a seasoned veteran at 168 lbs., holding all four major belts. Crawford, despite his flawless 41-0 record, has never fought at super middleweight. On September 13, something has to give.

Will Canelo’s size and power overwhelm the challenger—or will Crawford’s skill and adaptability shock the world? Either way, with Andre Ward on the mic, fans are guaranteed top-level analysis on boxing’s biggest night.
