A leaner, fitter Luka Dončić is causing waves even before the NBA season tips off—and it’s not just fans who’ve taken notice. According to one unnamed NBA coach, the rest of the league should be on high alert now that the Los Angeles Lakers’ newest star is in peak condition.

“Honestly, it’s a little scary,” the coach shared with Heavy Sports’ Steve Bulpett. “He was already elite when he wasn’t in shape. If he’s trimmed down and healthier now, his game is only going to become more dangerous.”

Dončić, known for his high basketball IQ, strength, and court vision, has often been criticized in the past for not being in ideal shape. Still, he consistently put up monster numbers—averaging 28.6 points per game throughout his career, alongside 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists.

This summer, however, Dončić reportedly underwent a significant body transformation by embracing a gluten-free, low-sugar diet combined with intermittent fasting, as reported by Men’s Health. The result? A noticeably slimmer and quicker version of the 26-year-old superstar, who is entering his first full season with the Lakers.

“He’s always had the skills,” the coach added. “But now, with better stamina and mobility, it could be a nightmare to defend him over the course of a season—especially in the playoffs when it really matters.”

Despite only playing 50 games last season while splitting time between Dallas and Los Angeles, Dončić still managed to average 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists—even while critics questioned his conditioning.

Behind the scenes, some in the Mavericks organization had previously labeled him as “lazy” or “unmotivated,” particularly regarding his fitness. But his recent dedication has silenced many doubters and reinvigorated excitement around his future.

The Lakers, now preparing to offer Dončić a long-term extension, appear confident they’ve landed a franchise cornerstone. If his offseason work translates into even more dominant performances, Los Angeles might just have the league’s most dangerous version of Dončić yet.

And if one coach’s fears are any indication, the rest of the NBA may not be ready for what’s coming.
