The 20-year-old Filipina, ranked No. 75, looked all but finished after falling behind 1-5 in the deciding set. But instead of folding, Eala dug deep, clawing her way back point by point and eventually forcing a tiebreak. What followed was pure grit and fire, as she closed out a dramatic 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11) victory that electrified the New York crowd.
With the win, Eala became the first Filipino ever to capture a main-draw victory at a Grand Slam in the Open era — a groundbreaking achievement that cements her place in history.

The turning point came late in the third set when Tauson, already serving for the match, was halted by a controversial moment. On a net-charging shot, the chair umpire reviewed the play through video replay and confirmed that Eala’s racket never crossed illegally, awarding the crucial point to the Filipina. Tauson argued fiercely, but the crowd had already chosen their hero — and they roared louder for Eala with every swing.

Clearly rattled, Tauson double-faulted to give Eala a lifeline. From there, the Pinay star fed off the energy of the Grandstand, winning 16 of the next 21 points and forcing her opponent to play on the defensive. Even so, it took Eala five match points before finally sealing the win after an exhausting two-and-a-half-hour battle.

When Tauson’s last forehand sailed long, Eala collapsed to the court, overwhelmed with emotion. Moments later, she was on her feet, waving to the fans who had cheered her on like one of their own.

This was more than just a victory — it was a statement. Eala proved she can go toe-to-toe with the world’s best and come out on top, even under the brightest lights of a Grand Slam.
Filipino fans around the globe will remember this night as the one where Alex Eala not only survived but thrived — showing the heart of a champion and giving a glimpse of just how far she can go.
