The 20-year-old, currently ranked No. 68 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) standings, gave fans a glimpse of her practice session on social media—an encouraging update following her recent withdrawal from the Cincinnati tournament due to shoulder problems.
Eala’s shoulder issues first flared up during the Montreal Open, affecting her performance in late July. She bowed out in the second round of the Canadian tournament after a hard-fought three-set match against 26-year-old Czech Marketa Vondrousova, ending 6-3, 1-6, 2-6. The loss was a clear indication that her physical condition wasn’t at its best, prompting her team to prioritize recovery.

Now back on court, Eala is shifting her focus to the upcoming US Open, where she aims to make a strong impression. The final Grand Slam of the year will test her readiness both physically and mentally, especially with her recent setbacks.
Her current ranking at No. 68 marks a slight drop from her career-high No. 56 achieved in June. That breakthrough ranking came shortly after her solid run in the Eastbourne Open and just before her Wimbledon campaign. However, inconsistent results in her recent tournaments have caused her to slip a few spots.

Despite the dip in ranking, the young star remains undeterred. Known for her grit and work ethic, Eala has steadily climbed the global rankings over the past few years, becoming one of the Philippines’ brightest hopes in international tennis. Training at the Rafa Nadal Academy—a facility renowned for producing elite athletes—provides her access to world-class coaching and sparring partners, essential tools for regaining peak form before a major tournament.
With the US Open fast approaching, Eala’s priority will be to fine-tune her game and ensure her shoulder holds up through the demanding two-week competition. Fans back home will be watching closely, hoping that the young Filipina can deliver another memorable run on tennis’ grand stage.Alex Eala training at RNA 👀
