As Gilas Pilipinas grapples with a string of frontcourt injuries ahead of key tournaments, rising star AJ Edu has stepped into the spotlight—and he isn’t backing down. With veteran big men sidelined, the 6-foot-11 center is bracing to bolster the national team’s interior presence.

Head coach Tim Cone recently admitted the team’s injury crisis in the paint is “certainly a concern,” putting added pressure on floor-spacing and defensive schemes. Edu, sensing the call to arms, claims he’s ready for the challenge.

“I’m ready for more minutes and greater responsibility,” Edu affirmed in an exclusive sit-down with Philstar News

The 25-year-old former Toledo Rockets standout acknowledged that with key players missing, the team's success now hinges on his ability to protect the rim and secure rebounds. He has been diligently refining his defensive instincts and timing, aiming to transform into Gilas’s new anchor.

Despite his raw athleticism, Edu knows this is more than a physical test—it’s a mental one.

“This is about earning trust,” he said. “I need to show I can handle tough matchups and big-game moments.” His confidence comes from a blend of hard work and belief: Gilas needs him—and he’s ready to step up.

For Philippine basketball fans, Edu’s emergence couldn’t come at a better time. With crucial qualifying windows on the horizon, his ability to fill the void will directly impact the team’s competitiveness regionally and globally. Whether anchoring lockdown defense or commanding the boards, Edu’s evolution has suddenly become vital to Gilas's aspirations.

As the squad shapes up for international competition, all eyes will be on Edu to see if he can thrive under the weight of expectations.

Can this towering talent rise to the occasion and help steady the ship? The road to redemption—and potentially redemption itself—could very well be paved through his growth.
